Time Flies When You’re Having Fun…….. and When You’re Not

Prepping takes alot. It takes money to buy the gear and books or pay for the courses/classes. It takes research to find what best suits your needs. It takes space to do all the projects, and grow the gardens, and store the gear. One area so many preppers seem to fail to appreciate is TIME.

Time is one of those perishable resources that you cannot create more of and you can’t get back the time you’ve lost. Time is immensely valuable. All sorts of things come up in life that interrupt plans and cause delays. It is important that we don’t lose time unnecessarily and that we maximize the time we have.

In the last few weeks so many things have come up that have disrupted my prepping plans (and most plans in general) that I have spent the last five or six weeks trying to get caught up on EVERYTHING. Weather has caused many delays with work projects. Moving from one house to another has taken up any other available “free” time. Short version: I had to set quite a few things aside while I tended to some pretty big issues. However, if this sounds like a complaint, it is definitely not. The past few weeks have been great. They have reminded me just how important it is to set aside time for the things I need to make sure stay current. I’m working now to better allot time for several things I want to make sure I do regularly, if not daily. Prepping is one of those things. I have also been doing quite a bit of prepping “inventory”. While I have not been able to make measurable progress on any prepping, I have had a chance to put my hands on much of my stuff and take mental note of what is where and how much there is. I’ve also had the chance to make plans for improving my storage options and locations of several preps. It has also been an opportunity to go through lots of stuff that has been boxed and put away for quite awhile and decide whether to keep or discard. So, the last few weeks have not been a loss. They have just been a disruption of my regularly scheduled programming.

Things are starting to level out again and I might even get ahead with some work. With that progress, I’m going to do a good bit of forward prep for work projects and servicing and maintenance of equipment so that I can prevent as many issues as possible from popping up at inopportune times. I’m also going to take the chance to build in prepping time into my schedule. The final project I need to get caught up on will put some much needed “extra” money in my pocket, although not for very long as I have had some unexpected expenses pop up in the last few weeks that are going to hit hard. This “extra” money will go a long way towards softening, if not totally absorbing, that financial blow. All of this is to say, I definitely plan to make the best use of every bit of time I have for the next couple of weeks to get leveled out again. Then I’m going to continue making the best use of my time to stay as far ahead as possible and get as much prepping done as is possible. The next time I get hit with so many setbacks, I want to be able to only get knocked back to on-time.

Don’t waste time with with things that only set you back. Don’t waste time with things that are preventing you from doing what you need to do. Don’t waste valuable time on anything that is not worth that time.

  1. I do see your point but in the past I found that I was too centered on prepping and ignoring life.
It’s all too easy to forget that there is a world going on ‘out there’, friends to touch base with, simple things like going for a walk, shopping for the little things, and enjoying life while you can.

So now my approach to prepping is diary controlled.
The basics of survival are in place with diary dates to check on expiration dates.
To going out to practice skills, BUT also to set aside time for living, for enjoying things.

    What if something happens?
I know my kit and stores are OK because of the diary.
The GO Bag lives in the car, the EDC on my belt.
And it’s market day with a flea market this week where you can pick up all sorts of goodies for less money than a packet of biscuits.

    Thus I am prepared.
To have a good fun morning and not centered on buying next months ‘whatever is in vogue for the careful prepper’.

    Be safe.
